President Ramaphosa to address the 2019 Africa Travel Indaba

President Cyril Ramaphosa will on Saturday, 04 May 2019, address the annual Africa Travel Indaba at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre in Durban,KwaZulu-Natal.

The Indaba, which is hosted in Durban annually, provides a platform for African countries to showcase and market themselves as tourist destinations. It is also an opportunity for a dialogue on the collective positioning of “Brand Africa” to attract more tourists and grow the African   tourism market.

The  Indaba features exhibitions on countries including the Republic of Botswana, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Kingdom of Lesotho, the  Republic of Malawi, the Republic of Mozambique, the Republic of Namibia, the Republic of Zambia, the Republic of Zimbabwe, the Republic of  Madagascar, the Republic of Rwanda and the Republic of Uganda.

This flagship event is attended by a range of exhibitors; local and international buyers; tourism and business media; industry stakeholders; members of tourism associations and captains of industry.

President Ramaphosa will visit a number of exhibition stands before delivering a keynote address in line with the 2019 Indaba theme which focuses on 25 years of freedom and democracy in South Africa.

President Ramaphosa extends condolences to Mr Julius Malema and family

President Cyril Ramaphosa has offered his heartfelt condolences to Economic Freedom Fighters leader Mr Julius Malema following the passing away of Mr Malema’s grandmother, Koko Sarah Malema. 

The President’s thoughts and prayers are with Mr Malema, his family and his organisation as they take leave of a matriarch who had played a significant role in her family and in the life of Mr Malema in particular. 

President Ramaphosa has said: “This bereavement is felt more sorely because of the special relationship Mr Malema enjoyed with his grandmother. I too  have fond memories of Koko Malema following an opportunity I had to speak to her when she was in hospital. It is my hope that Mr Malema will draw  strength from his beloved grandmother’s values and her presence in his life.”

President Cyril Ramaphosa to cast his vote in Chiawelo, Soweto

President Cyril Ramaphosa and his spouse, Dr Tshepo Motsepe, will on Wednesday, 08 May 2019, cast their votes at Hitekani Primary School,   Chiawelo, Soweto.

President Ramaphosa spent his early life in Soweto and is registered to vote in Chiawelo.

President Ramaphosa has once more encouraged eligible voters to go out in their numbers to participate in the sixth democratic national and provincial elections.

Underscoring his message to this effect in the 2019 State of the Nation Address, President Ramaphosa said: “As part of our celebration of 25 years of freedom and democracy, this election is an important milestone in our development as a nation and it is our duty as citizens to exercise our hard-won right to determine the direction in which the country moves. Our vote ensures that our democracy remains vibrant and inclusive.”

President wishes Muslim community well for Ramadan

President Cyril Ramaphosa has offered his well wishes to South Africa’s Muslim community of close to 900 000 people for the Holy Month of   Ramadan.

Ramadan is an annual period during which Muslims around the world undertake prayer, fasting and acts of charity with a special devotional focus.

The month also commemorates the revelation of the first verses of the Qu’ran to the Prophet Mohammed Peace Be Upon Him.

President Ramaphosa said: “The Muslim community is an important and integral part of our national diversity and of our national character.

“The positive values that are cherished and practised by Muslims around our country are an important contribution to the ethical and moral renewal that is underway in our society.

“It is therefore opportune that this holy month unfolds in 2019 at a time when our country is at a decision point and we are on the threshold of new possibilities for growing South Africa together.

“At this time, the religious observance of Muslims and this community’s focus on bettering the lives of disadvantaged citizens around the country is a most welcome providence.”

President Ramaphosa to attend 2019 election results announcement

President Cyril Ramaphosa will attend the official announcement by the Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) of the results of   the 2019 national and provincial elections.

The announcement will take place tomorrow, Saturday 11 May 2019, at the IEC Results Operations Centre at the Tshwane Events Centre in Pretoria.   While the President is due to undertake this visit at 18h00, his schedule will be informed in part by the IEC’s own schedule.

President Ramaphosa will also attend the IEC-hosted dinner that will follow the results announcement.

President Ramaphosa to visit the IEC Results Operations Centre

President Cyril Ramaphosa will visit the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) Results Operations Centre for the 2019 National and Provincial   Elections at the Tshwane Events Centre in Pretoria today, Friday, 10 May 2019.

South Africa held its sixth democratic National and Provincial elections on Wednesday, 8 May 2019.

The outcome of the elections will inform changes to public representation in the national and provincial legislatures.

During his visit to the Tshwane Events Centre, the President will do a walk-about to see the closing stages of the results process.

President Cyril Ramaphosa will tomorrow, 15 May 2019, attend and participate in an investor conference in Johannesburg hosted by the Goldman   Sachs Group, Inc.
 
Goldman Sachs is a leading global investment banking, securities and investment management firm that provides a wide range of financial services   to a substantial and diversified client base that includes corporations, financial institutions, governments and individuals.
 
The conference at the Four Season Hotel, Westcliffe, will bring together chief executive officers, chief information officers, chief financial officers and chairpersons of leading companies and financial institutions across all industry sectors from South Africa and other parts of the continent.
 
The Goldman Sachs conference follows South Africa’s successful hosting of an investment conference in October 2018 where South African and international firms made a broad range of pledges to establish or expand operations in South Africa.
 
President Ramaphosa announced in the 2019 State of the Nation Address that a second conference will be convened later in 2018. The President has welcomed the Goldman Sachs platform as a welcome precursor to the second investment conference.
 
President Ramaphosa will once again highlight government’s commitment to and plans for achieving inclusive growth that will benefit all stakeholders in the South African economy.

President Cyril Ramaphosa will tomorrow, 15 May 2019, receive Letters of Credence from Ambassadors and High Commissioners-designate who have been designated by the governments of twelve (12) countries to serve in diplomatic missions in South Africa.

Tomorrow’s credentials ceremony will take place at the Sefako Makgatho Presidential Guesthouse in Pretoria.

Heads of Mission-designates from the following countries are due to advance diplomatic relations between their home countries and South Africa: Ukraine, Republic of Montenegro, Republic of Botswana, Republic of Guinea, Japan, Hellenic Republic of Greece, Republic of Iraq, Republic of Italy, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dominican Republic, Argentine Republic, and the Republic of Serbia.

President commits sixth administration to economic growth and better service to citizens

The structure of Cabinet in the sixth administration will enable government to focus on generating higher economic growth, creating more jobs and serving the people of South Africa better.

President Cyril Ramaphosa provided this assurance during his interaction today, Wednesday 15 May 2019, with a forum of chief executive officers, chief information officers, chief financial officers and chairpersons of leading companies and financial institutions across all industry sectors from   South Africa and other parts of the continent.

The President’s interaction with business leaders representing assets under management of $400 billion formed part of a forum convened by Goldman Sachs.

Goldman Sachs is a leading global investment banking, securities and investment management firm that provides a wide range of financial services to a substantial and diversified client base that includes corporations, financial institutions, governments and individuals.

The interaction with the President focused on government’s plans to achieve higher growth during the sixth administration and in the coming two decades.

President Ramaphosa said the outcome of the national and provincial elections on Wednesday, 08 May 2019, was a demonstration of confidence in the governing African National Congress and expressed the expectation of citizens for a better life, an end to corruption and economic growth.

The President said the incoming administration would focus on implementation of the National Development Plan (NDP) and plans that feed into the NDP, and implementation would be driven by “men and women with great competence and capability to serve the people of South Africa so that we can secure economic growth”.

President Ramaphosa acknowledged that weaknesses existed within state-owned enterprises but said work had begun to strengthen governance and the financial standing of state-owned enterprises including Eskom.

On land reform, President Ramaphosa reiterated government’s commitment to a program me of land reform that will unfold within the framework of the Constitution and the law.

The President said this programme would be orderly and would entail participation by all South Africans.

Statement on appointment of head of NDPP Investigating Directorate
Body

President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Adv Hermione Theresa Cronje as head of the Investigating Directorate in the Office of the National Director of Public Prosecutions.

In March 2019 President Ramaphosa proclaimed the establishment of an Investigating Directorate in the Office of the National Director of Public Prosecutions, in terms of Section 7(1) of the National Prosecuting Authority Act, 1998 (Act No.32 of 1998).

The Investigating Directorate is tasked with investigating common law offences including fraud, forgery, uttering, theft and any offence involving dishonesty.

President Ramaphosa has in terms of Section 13(1)(b) read with Section 14 of the National Prosecuting Authority Act appointed Adv Cronje as an Investigating Director for a period of five years with effect from 15 May 2019.

Adv Cronje has a Masters in Public Administration from Harvard University, Kennedy School of Government (2010); and a BA (1993) and LLB (1996) from the University of Cape Town.

From 1998 to 2012, she was employed in various capacities in the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) of South Africa - first as an assistant to the first National Director of Public Prosecutions; as founding member of the Asset Forfeiture Unit, and for 10 years as Regional Head of the Asset Forfeiture Unit in the Western Cape.

In her last year in the NPA she was involved in the establishment of the Anti-Corruption Task Team (ACTT), a multi-agency task team established to investigate, prosecute and recover the assets of persons involved in large-scale corruption.

Since 2013, Adv Cronje has been engaged as a consultant on behalf of the Stolen Assets Recovery Initiative (StAR) - a joint initiative of the World Bank and UNODC. In this capacity she has worked as an advisor and mentor to asset recovery and anti-corruption units in Tanzania, Uganda, Namibia, Kenya, Nigeria, Romania, Ukraine, Moldova and Sri Lanka.

She is also a practising advocate of the High Court of South Africa.

In 2017 she drafted a United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Study on the Effective Management and Disposal of Seized and Confiscated Assets.

The Investigating Directorate she will lead in her new role will attend to statutory offences including but not limited to contraventions of:

• The Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act 6 of 2000;
• The Prevention of Organised Crime Act 121 of 1988;
• The Protection of Constitutional Democracy against Terrorist and Related Activities Act 33 of 2004;
• The Public Finance Management Act 1 of 1999;
• The Municipal Management Act 56 of 2003;
• The Financial Intelligence Centre Act 38 of 2001; and
• Any other statutory offence involving dishonesty.

In addition, the directorate will investigate any unlawful activities relating to serious, high-profile or complex corruption including but not limited to offences or criminal or unlawful activities arising from current commissions and enquiries.
